August 2026 update

This update took us some time, but we promise it was worth the wait! So let’s not tarry and take a closer look, shall we?

Exercises have arrived!

Until today, your Vocabulary was your very own encyclopedia of words and phrases — it showed you where you met them and how many times; you could read through it, and that was that. As of today, you can practice everything saved in it, as our exercises are built strictly from the tale material you’ve already encountered. And because exercises draw only from pages you have already read, everything you read expands your practice pool.

To explain why this took us longer than planned — at first we planned to make only a few basic exercises. So we did and then we thought “Okay, nice, let’s come up with a few more to make it more complete.” So we did and then thought “Alright, now it’s only natural that we should have these as well, right?” Well, yes, so again, we worked some more and then we took another look and thought “Huh, now that we have these, it only makes sense to come up with a few more variants to complete the picture. Shouldn’t take long either.” Long story short, we came up with 104 exercises (technically, it was 108, but four of them didn’t work that great in the end). So, we might’ve bitten off a tad bigger piece than we originally aimed for.

They come in many shapes and sizes. Some ask you to recognize the right translation or to piece a phrase back together, some expect you to write the whole lexical unit yourself, and other ones send you back into a page of the tale, where the words live.

The exercises are intended as a stress-free way to help you retain and practice what you’ve already learned during reading. Practicing within a context you already know strengthens the links between the newly learned words and the story, its characters and events. Those links are what carry words from your short-term memory into the long-term one, and the results are nothing short of miraculous. Try it and see for yourself!

Don’t worry about getting stuck as each exercise offers some sort of hint, so you should never reach a point of no return.

All of your progress is noted, and as you gain competence in each lexical unit, more and more types of exercises keep opening up.

You can review your competence level of each word and phrase in the Vocabulary:

Want to practice something specific? Click or tap the Settings button (the bookmark-shaped one with the cogwheel symbol; already familiar from the tale reading page) at the top and narrow your exercises pool down to a single tale, a chapter, or a specific range of pages. If you’re learning more than one language pair, this is also where you can switch between them:

Should any exercise misbehave let us know and it will get some stern talking-to once we catch it. The red bookmark-shaped button with a bug is right there at the top next to the Settings, just the same as in the tales:

Should you want a word or phrase out of your exercises entirely, whatever your reason may be, the “Exclude from exercises” button in the bottom left ensures you won’t see it in exercises again.

Changed your mind? Every entry in the Vocabulary now has an exclude toggle of its own too, so you can bring lexical units back to your exercises, or exclude them in advance:

And one more addition: should you find some word or phrase to be a real headscratcher demanding a more thorough look, each entry in the Vocabulary now has a focused practice button, which narrows the exercise pool to only that lexical unit. Keep in mind that exercises use the contexts you have actually met, so a word you have seen only once will keep repeating only that one example.

The Order of the Quill unveiled

The mysterious Order has decided the time has come to step out of the shadows. We are not at liberty to say much, for the Order is a secretive and obscure society. Only one thing is known: the Order values diligence, discipline and dedication. And it always keeps a watchful eye out for new initiates. Keep at your studies and the honor of rising through the ranks of the Order may be bestowed upon you.

Two new tales on the way

You may have already spotted the “COMING SOON” ribbons on the tales page. Some are still at the scribes, some are still at the binders, but some are already hitting the bookshelves. We will make a proper introduction for each once all the languages are ready but keep an eye on the shelves in the meantime.

And the small things

On the Vocabulary page, to fit all the buttons on small screens, we hid them all under a small dropdown menu. Wider screens still see them all.

The tale selection page now remembers where you left off with your readings. You no longer need to click the tale and then the language each time. Just one click on the bookmark:

The last, albeit non-visual change worth a mention is that we optimized the plumbing of the Vocabulary page. It no longer does a few wasteful round trips around the known world, so browsing even a large collection is now considerably faster.

And as usual, this update brings a large number of smaller fixes and improvements in all corners of Quilingo to make your learning journey more pleasant.
